Greece
One cannot discuss a travel to history without mentioning Greece. It is a country so old and stepped in mythology such as Zeus, the king of all gods and his wife Hera. You also need to include his brothers Hades and Poseidon and the place of heavenly abode known as Mt. Olympus (Greek name is Olympos). The great epics of Illiad and Odyssey by Homer has entered the Western language and even the world’s consciousness. When you visit Greece, it is akin to going back several thousands of years to the beginnings of Western civilization itself. We owe much to the Greeks such as the concepts of democracy and Plato’s philosophy as well as that of Aristotle, the beginnings of the Olympic games and the cradle of Western literature and drama (especially Greek comedy and tragedy).

Greece was the world’s first truly global superpower with Alexander the Great conquering most of the known world during his brief 30-years’ life. He established the world’s largest empire the world has ever seen. Not even the Roman Empire at its height surpassed the vast lands under Greek control during his zenith in military conquests. The Mongols under Kublai Khan and Genghis Khan came close to approximating his military achievements but even Julius Caesar admired Alexander as a model. The Greek city of Sparta became famous for uttering the briefest reply in the annals of military history: “If” as a reply to King Philip II’s threats to burn the city to the ground if he can defeat it. Sparta was a rival city of Athens which gave birth to Democracy.

Today, modern Greece is a progressive country with little incidence of poverty as indicated by its low Gini co-efficient. Greece is able to give a correct balance between modernity and history to any tourist visitor. If you are lucky, you might even find remnants of Atlantis near the island of Santorini, they say. Greece is no longer dirt cheap as progress and inflation has caught up with it. Travel to Greece needs a minimum of 40 Euros which means this amount is hardly enough for a decent hostel and you do not eat in restaurants but in sidewalk diners. If you plan to eat out regularly fairly decently and sleep in a comfortable bed, then budget at least 80 Euros per day of stay. But if you aspire for a real vacation with all the sightseeing there is, then a 120 Euros daily budget is highly recommended. Most upscale hotels and restaurants accept credit cards.
